This is not legal advice. POPIA still changes how a camera system should be built, and that part is our job.
A camera on your own driveway is a different thing from a camera that looks into the neighbour's yard, or across a pavement, or into a staff change room. We will aim cameras at the risk you actually have. We will not 'cover everything' by filming people who did not agree to be the subject of your security system.
Footage is personal information when you can tell who someone is. Keeping 90 days because the disk is large is a decision, not a default. Keeping it on a recorder with admin/admin, port-forwarded so a phone app was easy in 2019, is an open door.
Someone should be responsible for exports. On a complex, that should survive the next AGM. On a small office, it should not be a shared login taped to the recorder. Remote viewing is fine. The whole internet viewing is not.
Signs, privacy notices and the argument with a neighbour are for you and, if you need it, a lawyer. We will document where the cameras point and who has an account. Bring us in before the brackets go up if this is a complex or a workplace. Houses are simpler, and the neighbour's windows still count.
Book a security assessment if you want this looked at on the property. Pretoria 012 346 0525, Sandton 010 011 2372.
Who may export footage, and for how long it is kept, belongs in the same conversation as the cameras. Book the assessment and say if it is a house or a business.
